COLETTE & PHIL

"ANCIENT ANCESTORS"

Mystery Song Productions

Like a voyage through time, the music in this album takes us towards the unknown eras of yesterday, but also towards the unknown tomorrow. In their second album, Colette and Phil have succeeded in creating an epic symphony, intense, full of warmth, beauty and also mystery. To this end they have masterfully utilized various stylistic elements that fit perfectly together, thus providing their music with a clear personal style. With a basic structure that ranges from space Ambient to the most symphonic sector of New Instrumental Music, Colette's ethereal voice turns out to be the ideal complement to enhance the vitality appreciated in all the tracks. Rather than singing in the conventional sense, Colette utilizes her voice in numerous passages as if it were an instrument, without necessarily resorting to words. Her crystaline voice is perceived perfectly blended with the choirs of synthesizers, played by Phil, in such a way that the frontiers between the acoustic and the electronic are lost in the horizon of musical magic. The electronic treatment of Colette's vocals in various passages enhances the most mysterious shades of her vocal technique and makes it look as if we were dreaming the fact that we are hearing her. Colette's artistic sensitivity, palpable both in the poetry books she has written and in her career as an actress, is clearly perceived throughout the album. Wrapped in wondrous orchestrations, at times with a heavenly air, melodies possessing a great strength are flowing one after the other. The piano, played with an exquisite sensitivity by Colette, has a solo role in diverse parts of the CD. Phil makes an imaginative use of synthesizers and electric guitars, like an alchemist of sound, emphasizing the mystic character that many passages have. Besides Colette J. Burre and Phil J. Willett, other artists have collaborated as performers: Brad A. Nutcher (excellent electronic drums and MIDI programming), Richard Duvall, Jimmy Zeranski and John McKay. The album is certainly being noticed in the USA, as proved by the fact that the producers of "Something Wonderful has Happened...but it was not in the news", a new, popular documentary about the controversial theme of the circles found on England crop fields, featured part of this music in their soundtrack. Colette and Phil have both well-consolidated artistic careers which have enriched their vision of music and which have helped them get associated with important names of the musical avantgarde of the last decades, as for instance George Winston or Ancient Future, to name but a few.
