JOHN TAVENER

"ETERNITY'S SUNRISE"

Harmonia Mundi

This album gathers several works composed by John Tavener and performed by the choir and orchestra of the Academy of Antique Music conducted by Paul Goodwin. The track opening the album and giving it its title was commissioned by the Academy to commemorate its first twenty-five years of functioning, having been premiered in 1998. The other compositions are: "Song of the Angel" (1995), "Petra: a ritual dream" (1996), "Sappho: lyrical fragments" (1981) and "Funeral canticle" (1996), which Tavener wrote as a homage to his father, at his death. The music, with a Classical shape yet dominated by the personal style of its author, possesses a great strength. It is emotional and ranges from melancholy to mystery, maintaining at all times a great wealth of shades. Here no doubt the merits of the performers can be appreciated, especially soprano Patricia Rozario, whose ethereal voice, modulated softly, slowly, enhances the mysterious, dreamy nature of the music.
