Two long themes constitute this compact disc by Peter Bastian. "Northern Lights", which gives its title to the album, is a warm melodic piece. "Invocation" is ethereal, mystic, dark. A definite tendency towards the cosmic and the mysterious pervades the whole compact disc. The music is slow, although it does not lack rhythm in certain passages. The most dynamic part tends to belong to the World Music influences. Not being quite tragic, the work maintains a certain melancholy air, perhaps hinted at by the slow cadence of the music.
