JOANNE SHENANDOAH

"MATRIARCH"

Silver Wave Records

Matriarch is the personal homage of virtuoso singer Joanne Shenandoah to the woman, and particularly to the Iroquois woman. In the album there is a selection of traditional songs of the ancient American tribes, all of them devoted to "Lifegivers", the native mothers that, in the case of the Iroquois, have a supreme importance in the political, economic and social development of the tribes. These are 13 themes extracted from the popular tradition of the Haudenosaunee, an Iroquois tribe that composed them in times long gone by. Matriarch has been co-produced by Tom Wasinger, whos has intervened to provide the album with a cordial, intimist atmosphere. To make it, Wasinger and Shenandoah travelled all over the Oneida territory, visiting ancient Native American settlements. The titles of the songs, on the other hand, reflect Joanne's personal homage to womanhood: each one of them is named after a female member of her own family.
