CONSTANCE DEMBY

"NOVUS MAGNIFICAT"

Hearts of Space

The "mammy" of the new musics, the affectionate nickname that Constance has often been given because of her unending affability, will always be remembered among her followers because of her incomparable symphonism. Her production is not vast, but each one of her works is a true example of dedication and imagination. In Novus Magnificat, this American composer makes one of her best compositions, wisely mixing the mysterious tonalities of space music and the classicism of the ancient authors. Her melodies appear to grow little by little, in a continuous crescendo that reaches incredible heights. Demby utilizes in this work recorded in 1986 both electronic and acoustic instruments, but the former are not used because of what they mean, but for their own sonic brightness, which makes them participate without stridencies of a compact, indissoluble whole.
