"MAKAM, OTTOMAN CLASSICAL MUSIC"

Al Sur

This CD is a sample of Turkish folk music, as well as that from the regions that once were part of the Ottoman Empire. Their tonal forms remind the listener of the traditional Arab music as well as the Israelite traditional music. It has been very difficult to recover the compositions included in this album. Much of the music from those times (previous to the nineteenth century) has been lost. The eight pieces included in this work were composed by Hatipzadé Osman Effendi, Abdoul Halim Agha, and Mehmet Agha, of whom almost no biographical data are preserved today, and they are played by Kani Karaca and other Turkish musicians.
