THE PANTHER MODERNS

The Panther Moderns is a band formed around John Shirley, well known thanks to his career as a cyberpunk science fiction writer. For Shirley, music and literature are two channels to express the same ideas that motivate him to write or compose. He used to be a singer in such bands as Sado Nation and Obsession, and he also was the only punk musician in the cyberpunk movement of the eighties. His pioneering influence in it has been recognised as well as admired by such authors as William Gibson or Bruce Sterling, and he is considered to be the father of cyberpunk by some of them. In The Panther Moderns, Shirley writes and sings the lyrics, accompanied by John Karr at the guitar and keyboards, and Mike Deery at the bass, plus several other guest musicians. The music of the band is best described as "neopsychedelic postpunk" or "semi-industrial music".
